# Money without a single switch

Modern money is a stack of records: a deposit at a bank, a position at a central bank, a message on a payment network, a correspondent relationship that crosses a border. Each layer can be open to many users and still have a small number of parties who can halt, reverse, or refuse a transfer. Those parties are the switch.

**This page is not a token pitch.** Cryptocurrencies are one contested attempt to move some of that switch. They are not the definition of decentralized money. This desk will not treat a price, a market capitalization, or an unsourced “adoption” share as evidence. Markets tape: [US Market Updates](https://usmarketupdates.com), [Global Market Updates](https://globalmarketupdates.com).

## Where concentration actually sits

- Monetary authority: base money, policy rates, and crisis backstops.
- Correspondent and wholesale rails: a short list of intermediary banks and messaging networks.
- Retail networks: card schemes and large processors between merchants and banks.
- Account-level compliance: KYC and sanctions screening at the institutions that hold the records. Policy desks: [usforeignpolicy.org](https://usforeignpolicy.org), [foreigndiplomacy.org](https://foreigndiplomacy.org).

## What “decentralize the money” can mean

Do not collapse these:

- More issuers of notes or deposits.
- Settlement in a commodity or another state’s currency.
- Bilateral or regional correspondent arrangements that reduce dependence on one hub — framed without invented trade-share percentages on [What is BRICS’ de-dollarization note](https://whatisbrics.org/articles/de-dollarization/).
- A public protocol in which no single operator can unilaterally rewrite balances. Check that claim against who runs the clients, exchanges, stable-value issuers, and on-ramps.

## The trade-off this desk will name

A single switch is how a society does refunds, anti-fraud holds, and lawful freezes. Spreading settlement makes those tools weaker by design. Benefit if the danger is arbitrary exclusion; cost if the danger is theft or sanctions evasion. This site will not invent unlabeled settlement shares or price paths.
